About CALMH

What We Do

We're CALMH, Care for Autism, Learning Disabilities and Mental Health, a specialist complex care provider delivering supported living and residential care across Staffordshire.

We support adults with autism, learning disabilities, and complex mental health needs, including those with behaviours that challenge and those stepping down from hospital or Assessment and Treatment Unit (ATU) settings. Many of the people we support have a history of placement breakdown, and our services are designed specifically to address the gaps that led to it.

Every home we provide is single-occupancy, with support planned individually around each person's needs.

Our Vision & Mission

CALMH exists to deliver individualised, single-occupancy support for adults with autism, learning disabilities, and complex mental health needs, particularly where previous placements have broken down or a hospital admission has run longer than it should have. Our mission is simple: the right support, in the right home, at the right time, and it shapes every referral we accept and every plan we build.

That means reducing reliance on hospital-based care wherever a community placement can meet someone's needs safely, prioritising the least restrictive option in every decision, and supporting positive risk-taking where it genuinely improves someone's quality of life. We work to the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and Active Support models, in line with the Mental Capacity Act and the individual's right to make their own decisions wherever they have the capacity to do so.

Why We're Different

Complex care requires individualised planning at every stage, and that doesn't change as a service grows. As we expand across Staffordshire, each new placement is assessed on the same basis as our first: whether it's genuinely the right fit for the person moving in.

A diagnosis tells us what someone's needs might be. It doesn't tell us what they're capable of, or what a good life looks like for them. We start every placement by finding that out, and build the plan around it.

Our values

Four promises we make to every family.

Values are easy to list. These are the ones we expect you to hold us to, and here's what each looks like in real life.

Compassion

We lead every interaction with kindness.

Support workers who learn the small things: the music that calms, the meals that comfort, the routines that matter.
Integrity

We do what we say we will.

Straight answers for families and commissioners, even when the honest answer is the harder one.
Dignity & Respect

Every person lives on their own terms.

Choice, privacy and a front door of their own, with support shaped around the person and never the other way round.
Excellence

Good enough is never enough.

Clinically-led, reflective practice that keeps raising the bar, because “fine” isn’t what your family came here for.
— and we ask every family to hold us to them.
Safeguarding & governance

Warm support, rigorously run.

For families this is peace of mind; for commissioners, it's the detail. Either way, it's how we work every day.

01

Safeguarding first

Every team member is enhanced-DBS checked and trained to recognise, report and act on concerns. We work openly with families and local authorities, always.
02

Clinically governed

Nurse-led oversight, regular audits and reflective practice keep the quality of support visible to us, to commissioners and to the people we support.
03

Regulated & accountable

Registered with the Care Quality Commission, with transparent incident reporting and clear routes to raise a concern or complaint.
